Department of Revenue Important Changes

The Department of Revenue (DOR) has issued news regarding two important new changes that may affect your business.

Beginning January 1, 2010, resale certificates will no longer be available for wholesale purchases. During the Fall of 2009, the DOR will be issuing seller’s permits to businesses based upon their industry type and reporting history. If you do not receive a seller’s permit from the DOR, you may apply for one. Farmers and nonprofit organizations will be required to apply for the seller’s permit. All permits will be required to be renewed every two or four years.

Qualifying contractors in the construction industry will be required to reapply every year. Contractors will be required to use a separate seller’s permit application detailing materials and labor purchased.

The other new legislation from the DOR is for monthly filers. All monthly filers will be required to pay their taxes electronically starting July 2009 (due August 25, 2009). Businesses who do file electronically will have the choice of filing by e-check or credit card. Registering for e-filing can be done at http://dor.wa/gov. We can assist you with setting up this registration. If we are currently preparing these reports for you, we will complete the registration and obtain payment preference from you.

We understand that the above changes will impact many of your businesses as well as create many questions. Please feel free to call our office and speak with your CPA or Dawna Chase at (509) 663-1661 for assistance in answering questions, requesting more information on these important changes or assistance in applying for seller’s permits or registering with the DOR.
